The Self-Led Coach and the Self-Led Coaching Academy: What's the Difference?

If you've been searching for "self-led coach," you've probably found two different things with very similar names. One is The Self-Led Coach, a six-week introductory course from the IFS Institute, launched in 2026. The other is the Self-Led Coaching Academy (SLCA), my three-month certification program for coaches, running since mid-2024. The names are close enough that people are going to mix them up, so this page lays out what each one is, plainly and fairly. (Up front: I run SLCA. I am not affiliated with or endorsed by the IFS Institute, and nothing I offer is IFS Institute certification.)

What is The Self-Led Coach from the IFS Institute?

The Self-Led Coach is a live, six-week introduction to Internal Family Systems created for coaches: $425, about twelve hours over Zoom, with ICF continuing-education credits. The Institute describes it as a program for learning and personal insight, and states that it does not provide certification or prepare participants to use IFS with clients. It feeds into the Institute's deeper program, IFS Foundations for Coaches: $2,250, roughly 37 live hours, capped at 60 participants per cohort, with admission requiring at least one year of coaching experience and training or certification through an accredited coaching body.

The material comes from the model's home organization, and I think that's worth something. If you're an established, accredited coach and the cost and cohort calendar work for you, it's a real path. I compare it with every other option in the full IFS training comparison.

What is the Self-Led Coaching Academy?

SLCA is my program: three months, fully online and self-paced, $899, with three optional one-on-one calls with me and a free preview that is the actual opening modules, not a highlight reel. I was trained by the IFS Institute in 2014 and have practiced IFS daily since.

The curriculum pairs two things: the IFS model, and the action-based coaching methods that put it to work. Coaching clients hire you for change, so the program teaches the internal work, unblending, befriending protectors, building self-leadership in a client, alongside the external work of goals, action steps, and accountability, and how the two move together in a real session. Graduates are certified as Certified Self-Led Coaches. That is SLCA's own credential, honestly named: it is not IFS Institute certification, and no program for coaches offers that, mine included.

Why do the names sound so similar?

Because both draw on the model's own vocabulary. "Self-led" is core IFS language: the whole aim of the work is Self-leadership, living and working from the calm, curious, and compassionate place IFS calls Self. Programs teaching this material naturally reach for the same words. To be clear about the relationship between these two: there is none. SLCA is independent, the Institute's course is the Institute's, and neither is connected to the other.

Which one fits you?

Choose the Institute's path if you're an established coach with accredited-body training, you want the Institute's name on your coach education, and the $2,675 two-step ladder with its application gate and cohort dates works for your situation.

Choose SLCA if you want applied training that starts today, teaches IFS together with action-based coaching methods, includes a certification path open to you now regardless of how long you've been coaching, and costs $899 with a free preview so you can sit in the course before you pay anything.

The two also stack: plenty of coaches will take the Institute's intro for the source material and SLCA for the applied training and the credential.

Common questions

Is the Self-Led Coaching Academy affiliated with the IFS Institute?
No. I was trained by the IFS Institute in 2014 and I'm grateful for that education, but SLCA is my own independent program: not affiliated with, endorsed by, or certified by the IFS Institute.

Which program came first?
SLCA opened in mid-2024. The Institute's The Self-Led Coach course launched in 2026. Two different programs arrived at similar names through the model's shared vocabulary.

Does either program make me IFS certified?
No, and no coach program can. IFS Institute certification requires the Institute's own trainings, which currently require a clinical license. The Institute's Foundations for Coaches certificate says itself that it is not IFS certification, and SLCA's Certified Self-Led Coach credential is SLCA's own. The name on a credential should tell you exactly who granted it. More on this in what IFS certification actually means.
