The Transformative Power of New Experiences in Self-Therapy
In the journey of self-healing and growth, tools like Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy can be invaluable. But what happens when familiar routines keep us stuck? How can we activate the self-awareness needed to break free from entrenched patterns? One powerful yet often overlooked approach is embracing new experiences—an idea I’ve recently explored during a profound transition in my own life.
A Life on the Move
Since November 2024, I’ve been living in a van. Downsizing from a three-bedroom house and immersing myself in nature has been transformative. From installing solar panels to adventuring with my five-year-old son, every day has brought fresh challenges and joys. These experiences have profoundly impacted my consciousness and deepened my connection to myself and my internal system.
New experiences, whether as simple as taking a walk in nature or as significant as moving into a van, can elevate our awareness. This elevation—what I call “Consciousness”—is the gateway to self-led living. Let’s explore why new experiences matter and how they can complement your self-therapy journey.
Consciousness: The Key to Self-Leadership
In the context of IFS, Consciousness is the state of self-awareness where we can observe our parts, understand their roles, and decide our next steps with clarity. When we operate unconsciously, habits—often driven by protective or reactive parts—take over. While these habits may have served us at one time, they can keep us stuck in patterns that no longer serve our growth.
New experiences interrupt these habitual patterns. When we step out of our comfort zones, even in small ways, we activate our Consciousness. For example:
- Sleeping on a different side of the bed.
- Eating dinner at a different time.
- Taking a new route on your daily walk.
These subtle changes demand our attention, breaking the autopilot mode that many of us live in. Over time, this practice strengthens our ability to bring Consciousness into every aspect of our lives.
The Science of New Experiences
During a recent Hakomi training, a concept resonated deeply with me: new experiences naturally foster Consciousness. When we’re in unfamiliar situations, our habitual responses don’t suffice. This forces us to be present, to engage with life as it unfolds. This presence is where self-awareness flourishes.
For me, living in a van has been a crash course in new experiences. Every aspect of daily life—from finding places to park to adapting to a tiny living space—has required my full attention. The result? A heightened sense of aliveness and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of life.
Bringing Younger Parts Along
As I’ve navigated this transition, I’ve noticed something profound while spending time with my son. Whether stacking rocks by a river or exploring the woods, his sense of wonder and joy is palpable. This has taught me an important lesson: our younger parts—the ones holding innocence, curiosity, and sometimes unresolved wounds—can also benefit from new experiences.
Invite your inner younger parts to join you in activities that activate Consciousness. Imagine yourself as the leader of your internal family, guiding these parts to engage in life’s simple joys. Whether it’s a gentle hike, birdwatching, or simply sitting by a stream, these moments can foster healing and connection within your system.
Practical Tips for Activating Consciousness
- Start Small: Experiment with tiny changes in your routine. Small shifts can yield surprising results in breaking habitual patterns.
- Engage with Nature: Nature is a powerful catalyst for Consciousness. Spend time outdoors, and let your senses soak in the sights, sounds, and smells.
- Broadcast to Your System: Before engaging in a new activity, send an internal message to your parts. Invite them to join you, emphasizing the joy and peace you’re seeking.
- Be Present: When engaging in these activities, focus on the experience. Notice the details, the sensations, and the emotions that arise.
Moving Forward in Self-Therapy
If you’re feeling stuck in your self-therapy journey, consider incorporating new experiences as a tool for growth. These don’t have to be grand gestures; even small changes can activate the Consciousness needed to shift your internal dynamics. As you cultivate this awareness, you may find it easier to connect with your parts and lead your internal family with compassion and clarity.
